The application process and requirements for applying for admission to the University of Texas at Austin vary depending on the type of applicant you are and the type of student you are interested in becoming. Please review the information below to determine what you need to do to apply for admission.
U.S. Freshman Applicants
Overview
If you are, or soon will be, a high school graduate with no previous college attendance, you should apply as a freshman. You’ll find details about applying in the Freshman Admission section of Be a Longhorn.

U.S. Transfer Applicants

Applying for admission

Completion of at least 30 semester hours (or the equivalent) of transferable credit is required for transfer admission consideration.

Applicants for Readmission
Overview and application details
If you’re a former student who attended UT Austin as a regularly admitted student and you had your enrollment interrupted for at least one long (fall or spring) semester and you now wish to resume study at the University, you should submit the application for readmission.
- If you’re a former UT graduate student and wish to resume your previous program of study, you should also apply for readmission. You must be in good standing (with no academic or disciplinary bars); readmission is subject to the approval of your program’s graduate adviser.
- If you’re a former UT graduate student seeking a higher degree or study in a different graduate program, you should contact the Graduate and International Admissions Center to determine which application procedures to follow.
U.S. Summer Transient Applicants

If you’re a student at another college or university and wish to attend UT Austin as a visiting student during the summer only, you should apply as a transient student.

U.S. Graduate Applicants
Overview
You should apply for U.S. Graduate Admission if you are:
- A U.S. citizen
- A permanent resident of the U.S.
- An international student who has previously attended the University of Texas at Austin

Applying for graduate admission
For a list of graduate department deadlines, visit the Graduate Programs & Deadlines page.
To apply for graduate admission as a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, you must submit the following by the appropriate deadline:
- A complete ApplyTexas Application for Graduate Admission.
- Your application fee; the fee amount varies depending on the program to which you are applying.
- Official transcripts of all college coursework completed at any post-secondary college or university, including a transcript showing that you have earned a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or proof of equivalent training in a foreign institution.
- Official GRE or GMAT scores; the required scores vary depending on the program to which you are applying.
Additional requirements
Most programs have additional requirements and application materials that you must complete before they will consider your application for admission. Deadlines are set by individual graduate programs. Contact the program to which you are applying.
In addition to submitting the required items, international graduate applicants must show adequate subject preparation for the proposed graduate major and obtain a recommendation for admission by the Graduate Studies Committee in the proposed major. All complete applications are reviewed by the Graduate Studies Committee to which they are directed if they are received by the graduate program deadline. The Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies must approve all admissions.

International Freshman Applicants
Overview
- If you are not a U.S. citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident and if you are, or soon will be, a secondary school (high school) graduate with no previous post-secondary college attendance, you should apply as an international freshman.
- If you took any college coursework after graduating from secondary school, you should apply as an international transfer student (see information below).
- If you graduated from a Texas high school after three years of residence in Texas or if you have applied for permanent residency with USCIS and have resided in Texas for at least one year, you should apply in the same manner as a U.S. Freshman applicant (see information above).
Applying for admission
Summer/Fall Deadline: December 1
Spring Deadline: October 1
All required items must arrive in the Office of Admissions by the deadline. Mailing or postmarking your application by the indicated date does not mean that you have met the deadline. Applications that arrive after the deadline are considered for admission only if space is available.
Submit the following items to apply for international freshman admission:
- A complete application
- A $90 application fee
- Two essays, usually Essays A and B (Some UT Austin majors, scholarships and honors programs require additional essays and/or alternative essay topics not included in the ApplyTexas Application.)
- Official SAT I or ACT scores sent to our office directly by the testing agency (SAT code 6882, ACT code 4240)
- Official TOEFL (or IELTS) scores sent directly to our office by the testing agency (code 6882). This requirement is waived if you graduated from a high school in the U.S. or in a country where English is the only official language.
- An official copy of your most recent secondary school (high school) transcript

- Some programs may have specific enrollment limitations or additional requirements. Because the University is a state-supported institution, most of our freshman admission spaces are reserved for Texas residents. Admission is highly competitive for nonresidents and international students.
International Transfer Applicants
Overview
You should apply as an international transfer student if you fit into one of the following categories:
- You are a non-U.S. citizen or non-U.S. permanent resident who graduated from secondary school, took non-secondary college courses, and wish to register as an undergraduate.
- You have previously taken only correspondence courses, extension courses, or summer work under transient status at UT Austin and you wish to apply for admission to the University as a regularly admitted international undergraduate student.
If you graduated from a Texas high school after three years of residence in Texas or if you have applied for permanent residency with USCIS and have resided in Texas for at least one year, you should apply in the same manner as a U.S. Transfer applicant (see information above).
Applying for admission

- A complete application, including essays in response to Topic A: Statement of Purpose and Topic E. (Applicants to the School of Architecture and to majors in the Department of Art and Art History in the College of Fine Arts must submit an essay in response to Topic D in place of Topic A.)

- An official transcript from each college attended
- An official final secondary school transcript
- Official TOEFL (or IELTS) scores sent directly to our office by the testing agency (code 6882). This requirement is waived if you graduated from a high school in the U.S. or in a country where English is the only official language.
- If you are a transfer applicant with fewer than 30 transferrable college hours or less than one year of study completed at the time you apply for transfer, you must submit official SAT I or ACT scores. Have your scores sent directly to UT Austin from the testing agency (SAT code 6882 or ACT code 4240).

The statement of purpose is not meant to be a listing of accomplishments in high school unless this information is recent and applies to your area of study. This is your opportunity to address the International Admissions committee directly - to let us know more about you as an individual in a manner that simple statistics cannot convey.
Some programs have specific enrollment limitations or additional requirements for transfer students. Check requirements for the majors, programs, and scholarships in which you are interested.

International Graduate Applicants
Overview
You should apply for international graduate admission if you are:
- Not a U.S. citizen
- Not a permanent resident of the U.S.
- An international student who has never attended the University of Texas at Austin
International students who attended UT Austin as undergraduate students should apply for U.S. Graduate Admission (see information above).
If you are a former student who attended the University as a regularly admitted graduate student and you’ve had your enrollment interrupted for at least one long semester, apply for graduate readmission.

- Official transcripts of all college coursework completed at any post-secondary college or university, including a transcript showing that you have earned a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or proof of equivalent training in a foreign institution.
- Official GRE or GMAT scores; the required scores vary depending on the program to which you are applying.
- An official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score; a score of 550 on the paper test or 213 on the computer-based test is considered the minimum acceptable for admission to the University of Texas at Austin. If you hold a bachelor's degree from a U.S. institution or from an institution in another English-only speaking country, the TOEFL requirement will be waived. (This requirement can also be met by submitting official scores for the International English Language Testing System exam.)
In addition to submitting the above items, international graduate applicants must show adequate subject preparation for the proposed graduate major and obtain a recommendation for admission by the Graduate Studies Committee in the proposed major. All complete applications are reviewed by the Graduate Studies Committee to which they are directed if they are received by the graduate program deadline. Freshman and Transfer Major Codes
To view a list of available major codes on the ApplyTexas site,
- Follow the link to the form that will allow you to view majors for a specific university.
- Use the form to select the University of Texas at Austin as your target university and the application type.
- Click the “view majors offered” button. The View Majors page will appear.
- Select the semester in which you expect to enter, and click the “List Majors” button. The list of majors should appear.
