The University of Texas at Austin

Imagine this scene: It’s almost spring break. You’re enrolled in the 2010 spring semester, the final semester of your CAP year. Things are going well. Your GPA is on track. You’ll have 30 hours when you finish the semester. You’ve got everything pretty much under control.

Then one morning you’re having breakfast with a fellow CAP student who asks you this question: So where are you going to live when you get to Austin?

Before calling mom or dad for help, take some time to think about the following things that you’ll need to see about before enrolling at UT Austin.

Returning to UT Austin

Major selection process

When we contact you in the late fall of your freshman year, we’ll ask you if you’d like to apply to a major other than Undergraduate Studies, Liberal Arts or Natural Sciences. If you do opt to request a different major, there will be things you need to submit to us as part of that process. Be sure to follow up on the instructions we send to you if you’re interested in a major other than Undergraduate Studies.

Your final transcript

The last thing that you have to do to make sure that you complete your CAP requirements is to send us a final transcript that shows your completed fall and spring semester coursework. If you’re not sure how to request a transcript, contact your CAP advisor at the UT System school you’re attending for details.

Your transcript must arrive at UT Austin by June 1, 2010. Be sure to request it as soon as your spring semester grades are posted so that it can get to us in time.

Orientation

After you receive your official admission letter from UT Austin, including a decision about the major to which you’ve been admitted, you’ll be able to register for orientation. (Not all majors are represented at each session, so you’ll need to know the major to which you’ve been admitted before you can register.)

Visit the Orientation page on the transfer admission site for details.

Financial aid

If you are currently participating in the Coordinated Admission Program and plan to successfully complete the program requirements and enroll at UT Austin in the fall of 2010, you should apply for financial aid using the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) as soon as possible after January 1, 2010. Here are a few important details to keep in mind when completing the FAFSA.

  • If you submitted the 2009-2010 FAFSA for your freshman year aid, you may apply for financial aid for 2010-2011 using the Renewal FAFSA. If you did not submit a FAFSA for your freshman year and you wish to apply for aid for your sophomore year, you should complete the regular FAFSA.
  • You should list UT Austin and the current UT System school you are attending as schools to receive your FAFSA information.
  • The UT Austin school code is 003658.
  • The FAFSA priority deadline for UT Austin is March 31, 2010.

SCHOLARSHIPS

If you are currently participating in the Coordinated Admission Program and plan to successfully complete the program and enroll at UT Austin for your sophomore year, you should submit the Continuing & Transfer Student Scholarship Application. You can find more information about scholarship application procedures for CAP students at TexasScholarships.org. The scholarship deadline is April 1.

Housing

If you are interested in living on campus during your first year at UT Austin, you may apply for housing at any time after you accept your CAP offer. That means you can apply for housing now, if you’d like.

To apply for on-campus housing, access the online housing application.

  • If you applied to live on campus when you applied for freshman admission to UT Austin, you will not have to pay the $50 housing application fee when you complete the housing application.
  • If this is the first time you apply to live on campus at UT Austin, you will have to pay the $50 application fee when you apply.

Contracts for transfer and upper-division students are offered based on available space. You must be admitted to the university in order to receive a housing contract. If you are offered a housing contract, sign it and return it with a $300 nonrefundable advance payment to the Division of Housing and Food Service.

You’ll have the opportunity to rank your residence hall preferences and list a roommate (if you have someone in mind) after you are offered a housing contract. (Requests for specific residence halls are not guaranteed.)

The Division of Housing and Food Service maintains a list of some off-campus housing options.

Resources & services

UT students have a wide range of resources and services to help them once they’re on campus. Whether you’re looking for information about testing services, computer and internet services, health services and information, or you just want to know how to pay your tuition bill, you’ll find access to the right information on the Transfer Resources & Services page.
