Requirements and restrictions School of Nursing

Program-specific requirements

Entering freshmen must initially apply to and be accepted for admission as pre-nursing majors before enrolling in professional nursing courses.

In addition to submitting a complete application for admission, freshman applicants to the School of Nursing should also review the following information regarding special application requirements and admission restrictions.

  • Pre-professional Nursing: To major in nursing, you must be accepted for admission as a pre-nursing major and complete the prerequisite courses before applying for admission to the School of Nursing and enrolling in professional nursing courses. When you apply for admission to the Nursing major as a college sophomore, your application will be evaluated based on overall performance, with particular focus on the science courses you’ve taken and evidence of commitment to the profession.

Restricted Program: Pre-Nursing

Because admission to pre-nursing is so competitive, automatic admission as a result of top 10% status is restricted to the most qualified applicants.

Admitting Students to Restricted Majors

  • Top 10% Texas graduates are admitted to pre-nursing based on their relative class rank (beginning with the top 1%, top 2%, top 3%, etc.) until all available spaces for automatic admission are filled. (No more than 75% of the available spaces are filled through automatic admissions.)
  • If 75% of the available pre-nursing spaces are filled before all top 10% applicants are admitted, the remaining top 10% graduates compete with all other applicants for the remaining spaces (at least 25%). Admission decisions about these remaining spaces are based on individual review.
  • Top 10% graduates who are not admitted to the major of their choice are considered for their second-choice major. All top 10% Texas high school graduates who meet UT Austin’s application requirements are admitted to the University, although they may not be admitted to their requested major(s).
