Summer Freshman Class Frequently asked Questions
Select a question below to reveal the answer to frequently asked questions about the Summer Freshman Class (SFC).
About the Summer Freshman Class
Am I a regularly-admitted student even though I've been admitted to the Summer Freshman Class rather than the fall semester?
Yes. You are a regularly-admitted student to The University of Texas at Austin.
May I begin in the fall semester rather than the summer?
No. If you wish to enroll at UT Austin this year, you must begin your studies during the summer because the fall semester has limited space.
When do my classes begin?
Your classes will begin on Monday, June 16, 2008. You will enroll in eight to ten semester hours during a ten-week summer session that concludes on Monday, August 18, 2008 (the last day of finals). The college to which you're admitted for the summer (either Liberal Arts or Natural Sciences) will contact you in early April with details about how to select and register for your summer courses.
What should I do if the Summer Freshman Class (SFC) program begins before I'm scheduled to graduate from high school?
If your scheduled high school graduation conflicts with any part of SFC orientation (June 10-13, 2008) or the first week of classes (June 16-20, 2008), you should immediately contact the college to which you were admitted as part of the Summer Freshman Class and discuss possible options available to you. Contact the College of Liberal Arts at 512-471-4271 and the College of Natural Sciences at 512-471-4536.
Enrolling in the Summer Freshman Class
What must I do to reserve my space in the Summer Freshman Class?
You must pay your $200 enrollment deposit by May 1, 2008, and register for summer classes according to the information sent to you by your college. In addition, you should plan to attend summer orientation on June 10-13, 2008, to register for fall courses (review the Summer Orientation questions and answers on this page).
How do I register for my summer courses?
You will register for your summer courses online before you arrive at UT Austin. Around the beginning of April, the College of Liberal Arts or the College of Natural Sciences will contact you and provide more details about how to select and register for courses for the summer.
During the week of June 10, 2008, you will attend Summer Orientation on campus and register for your fall classes.
Will all the usual fall and spring semester classes be available to me during this special session?
Not all fall classes are available in the summer. However, a variety of courses are available in the summer, including many courses that Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences majors take during their first semesters on campus. By taking eight to ten hours of your freshman coursework in the summer, you will have time available in your fall and spring semesters to move beyond the courses that your freshman classmates, who begin in the fall or spring, will be taking.
Summer Orientation
Will there be a Summer Orientation for Summer Freshman Class students?
Yes! One of the best ways for you to learn more about UT Austin is to attend orientation. To meet the needs of the Summer Freshman Class, a special orientation session will be held June 10-13, 2008. During orientation, you will receive information about several issues that are critical to your success and be able to register for your fall classes. Visit the Summer Orientation section of Be a Longhorn to learn more and to sign up for orientation for the Summer Freshman Class.
On-Campus Housing
How do I obtain summer on-campus housing?
You are guaranteed summer on-campus housing if you apply for housing by April 15. Fall housing will be offered based on space availability and the date you submit your housing application. (If you already applied to live on campus this fall, you’ll need to complete an additional application for summer housing.) You may apply for on-campus housing online through the Housing section of Be a Longhorn. Contact the Division of Housing and Food Service at 512-471-3136 for more information.
Tuition and Financial Aid
What should I do about financial aid?
Visit the Office of Student Financial Services (OSFS) web site or contact them directly at 512-475-6282. If you have not yet completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which can be used for the next academic year (including summer, fall and spring), please do so as soon as possible.
How do I pay my tuition and fee bill for the summer?
To pay using a credit card, electronic funds transfer or electronic check, you can make your payment online through the My Tuition Bill site (UT EID required). If you do not pay your tuition and fee bill by the deadline, your registration will be cancelled and your courses will be dropped.
How much will tuition be for the courses I take during the summer?
Students admitted to UT Austin as part of the Summer Freshman Class will be charged a flat rate of tuition, which is a consolidation of tuition, mandatory fees, course fees and academic program costs. Learn more about the tuition rates for the colleges of Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences.
Placement Tests and Course Credit
I've placed out of some of the basic freshman courses. Will there be other courses available to me during the summer session that will apply to my degree?
Yes. UT Austin is committed to offering you appropriate course options during your summer session. The College of Liberals Arts or Natural Sciences will contact you in early April and provide you with information about selecting and registering for courses for the summer. If you still have questions after the reviewing the information they provide, call the college to which you've been admitted, either the College of Liberal Arts at 512-471-4271 or the College of Natural Sciences at 512-471-4536.
What about testing requirements?
The testing requirements for the summer are the same as those for the fall. All students who attend a Texas college, whether full-time or part-time, who are not exempt must take the THEA (Texas Higher Education Assessment) exam that is part of the Texas Success Initiative (TSI). Visit the TSI web site for information about exemptions. Most new freshmen are also required to take placement tests before they register for classes. Find out more about the tests you may need to take at the Instructional Assessment and Evaluation web site (formerly the Measurement & Evaluation Center).
What if I don't pass the THEA exam?
If you have a score that is below the passing level on one or more sections of the THEA exam, you must enroll in a related developmental studies course. Courses taken to satisfy TSI deficiencies do not count as part of the eight to ten hours required for the summer session. For specific information regarding TSI and THEA, please visit the UT Austin TSI Office web site or contact the office at 512-471-8277.
Changing Majors
May I change my major into another college for the summer session?
You may transfer between the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Natural Sciences by going to the dean's office or undergraduate advising office of the college in which you want to enroll. You may do this after you arrive on campus for your summer semester. You may not transfer to any other college (outside of Liberal Arts or Natural Sciences) during the summer. For information about the process and prospect of transferring to another college, contact the dean's office of undergraduate advising office in that college.
