Honors program application Special Instructions

Honors Application Available in August

The online honors application for students applying for admission for the fall 2009 semester will be available in August 2008.

Applying to Honors Programs

The online honors program application offers centralized access to all freshman honors program applications. To apply to and be considered for one or more UT Austin freshman honors programs, you must:

  1. Submit your ApplyTexas Application for Freshman Admission. You will not be able to begin the honors program application until you have submitted your admission application.
  2. Complete and submit the online portion of the honors program application. You only need to complete the application once even if you plan to apply to multiple programs; the application you receive after logging in will be adjusted to include items required for all the honors programs to which you are applying.
  3. Complete any additional steps required by the individual programs. You will be given details about individual program requirements after you submit the online portion of the Honors Programs Application.

Your admission application, honors program application and all required supporting materials (including SAT or ACT scores) for both admission and honors programs must be received by January 15, 2009. For Plan II Honors and Business Honors applicants applying for early consideration, all application materials must be received by November 1, 2008.

Why can’t I access the online honors application and recommendation system?

You won’t be able to access the online honors application or honors recommendation system until you submit your ApplyTexas Application for Freshman Admission. It may take up to three working days (about two weeks for paper applications) for us to receive and load your admission application into our system. Once your application is loaded, you’ll be able to access the honors program application and online recommendation system.

Application Requirements for Honors Programs

Before selecting the programs to which you’d like to apply, review the list of application requirements. All items needed to complete each application must be received by January 15, 2009. (Plan II and Business Honors have early consideration deadlines of November 1, 2008.) You must also submit a completed application for admission by January 15, 2009, to be considered for an honors program.

Why can’t I see all the honors programs I’d like to apply to?

You may only apply to honors programs associated with the colleges or departments that you select on your application for admission. For example, if you select a first-choice major in the College of Natural Sciences and a second-choice major in the College of Liberal Arts, you won’t be able to apply to the Business Honors Program in the McCombs School of Business unless you change your major.

Changing Your Major on Your Application for Admission

If an honors program that you're interested in applying to is not offered as an option on the online honors application, you must change your first and/or second choice major(s) in order to apply to that program.

IF YOU HAVE NOT SUBMITTED YOUR APPLYTEXAS APPLICATION:

To change your major selections, return to your online ApplyTexas Application for Admission, change your majors on the “Select Majors” page and save your application.

IF YOU’VE ALREADY SUBMITTED YOUR APPLYTEXAS APPLICATION:

To change your major selections, submit a change of major request in one of the following ways:

  • Fax: Send a fax to 512-471-5828 (Attention: Honors Program Application). Include your full name, UT EID and updated first- and/or second-choice major choices in the request.
  • E-mail: Send a major change request to the Office of Admissions. Include your full name, UT EID and updated first- and/or second-choice major choices in the request.

If your major change request is approved, your updated honors program choices will appear on the online honors application within 3-5 working days.

Submitting Honors Application Materials

The majority of the information required for an honors program application is submitted online. Admissions or honors application materials (such as paper resumes) that are not required to be submitted online may faxed or mailed directly to the Office of Admissions. All recommendations should be submitted using the online honors recommendation system (opening soon). No materials should be sent directly to the individual honors program offices.

Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

May I apply to more than one honors program?

Yes, you may apply to all of the honors programs for which you’re eligible.

If I want to apply to more than one honors program, do I need to submit multiple applications?

No, you only need to complete the application once even if you plan to apply to multiple programs. The application you receive after logging in will be adjusted to include all items required for all the honors programs to which you are applying.

Is there a paper honors application?

No, the honors application is only available online. Specific honors programs may have paper forms or documents that you need to submit as part of your application. Step 4 of the online honors program application will specify which materials you need to submit for your honors application to be complete.

When is the honors application due?

The online honors application and all required documents must be received in the Office of Admissions by January 15, 2009. If you are applying for early consideration for Plan II or Business Honors, your completed honors application, admissions application and all supporting materials (including SAT or ACT scores) for both admissions and honors must be received by November 1, 2008.

I'm applying for spring (or summer) admission to UT Austin. Can I apply to an honors program?

No, only freshman applicants applying for fall admission may apply to an honors program. If you are applying for spring or summer admission, contact the honors program in which you're interested to learn more about opportunities available to you once you've begun your studies at UT Austin.

I’m applying for transfer admission. Do I use the online honors application?

No, transfer applicants should follow the application instructions found on the individual honors programs websites.

Online Application and Requirements

Why isn’t the honors program I want listed as a choice on the honors application?

You may only apply to an honors program (or programs) in the college or department to which you’re applying on your application for admission.

Why can’t I access the online honors application and recommendation system?

You must first complete and submit the ApplyTexas Application for Freshman Admission. After your application for admission has been loaded to our computers, you will then be able to access the online honors application and recommendation system.

How do I know if you received my honors application and the additional materials that I submitted?

Log in to your Application Status page (using your UT EID and password) to find out what items we’ve received and what items are still missing. It may take 3-5 business days (once we receive your items) to process your materials and update the information on your Application Status page.

How do I cancel my honors application?

If you decide you'd no longer like to be considered for any honors program to which you've applied (or even begun to apply), it's not necessary for you to cancel your application. If your honors application is incomplete, you simply will not be considered for admission to an honors program.

However, if you'd like to formally cancel your application for ALL honors programs for which you are eligible, log in to your honors application and select the Cancel All Honors Applications button at the bottom of the first page (Step 1).

If you’d like to cancel an application for a particular honors program, log in to your honors application and uncheck the program(s) for which you no longer would like to be considered. You can do this on Step 1 of the honors application. IMPORTANT: Save your application by selecting Next Step at the bottom of the page. The honors application(s) for the programs you unchecked will be cancelled.

Do I need to submit a transcript to be considered for an honors program?

You do not need to submit a separate transcript for your honors application. The transcript you submit to the Office of Admissions to complete your application for admission will be shared with the honors program(s) to which you apply.

Online Recommendations

Can I submit a paper letter of recommendation as part of my honors application?

No. If you are applying to an honors program that requires a recommendation, the recommendation must be submitted online using the Honors Recommendation System. Paper letters of recommendation that are faxed or mailed to the Office of Admissions or an individual honors program office will not be added to your honors application file. They will, however, be added to your admission application file.

How do I submit an additional recommendation request?

When you submit a request for an individual to submit an honors program recommendation on your behalf, you’ll have the opportunity to enter the contact information for one individual. (No honors program requires more than one recommendation.)

If you want to send a recommendation request to another individual, you’ll need to start over at step one of the online recommendation process and submit another recommendation request.
