Paying for college Ut Austin Scholarships

Most university-wide scholarships, including some departmental and program scholarships, are awarded through the online ApplyTexas Application for Freshman Scholarships.

To apply for scholarships, you should:

  1. Begin your online application for admission early; remember your ApplyTexas.org application ID number and password.
  2. Use your application ID number to access the “Apply for Scholarships” option at applytexas.org (the ApplyTexas Application for Freshman Scholarships).
  3. Some scholarships may require special essays or letters of recommendation; find out what these special requirements are early enough to complete your application before the deadline.
  4. After completing the short answer questions and any special requirements, submit your completed scholarship application by December 1.

The financial aid office and other organizations that award scholarships consider your scholastic achievement, community involvement, leadership abilities, standardized test scores, and sometimes financial need when making their decisions. Visit TexasScholarships.org for more information about specific scholarships for which you may be eligible to apply.

Even if you don’t think you’ll qualify for need-based aid, it’s a good idea to apply for all types of aid by completing the FAFSA. Some scholarship awards are based in part on the information submitted when applying for financial aid.

College, Departmental and Program Scholarships

Completing the Freshman Scholarship application through ApplyTexas.org will ensure that you are considered for most university scholarships, including many that are awarded by the university’s academic areas. However, some colleges and departments also administer their own scholarships through a separate process. Check with the college or school to which you are applying to determine whether they offer scholarships for incoming freshmen that require a separate application process.

Special programs also sometimes offer scholarships outside both the applytexas.org process and the processes for academic scholarships. If you are interested in scholarships awarded for a special program, such as ROTC or athletics, you’ll need to learn about and follow the application process for these programs separately.

Apply for Outside Scholarships

You should also look for scholarship opportunities beyond UT Austin. From scholarships offered in your hometown or at your school to scholarships awarded by national foundations and corporations, many scholarship opportunities are out there for you.

You should never pay someone to help you find scholarships. The university offers lots of information and links to helpful free sites to assist you in locating available scholarships.
