What happens After Admission
If you are admitted to the university as an undergraduate, you must pay a non-refundable enrollment deposit of $200 by May 1 to indicate your acceptance of our offer of admission. This deposit will be applied to the payment of fees when you enroll.
International Student & Scholar Services
UT Austin’s International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) offers information, services, and programs to admitted and enrolled students who are not U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents. Whether you come to UT Austin from your home country or from a school or university in the U.S., we encourage you to become familiar with ISSS and its services.
Requirements and Programs for International Students
Immigration Requirements
After you’re admitted, ISSS will send you important information about immigration requirements and regulations. If you reside outside the U.S., you must apply for a student visa to enter the U.S. After you submit the required evidence of financial support to ISSS, the appropriate immigration document (I-20 or DS-2019) will be sent to you.
New International Student “Check-in”
Before registration at UT Austin, you must bring your immigration documents to the International Office for “check-in.” You will meet with an advisor who will give you information and answer your questions about immigration, insurance, registration, U.S. Social Security Number eligibility and other matters of importance.
International Student Orientation
Even if you participate in a regular orientation session, we encourage you to participate in international student orientation also. This fun and interactive event is your opportunity to meet many other international students and to make connections with departments on campus. The highlight is the Welcome Lunch and Information Fair. Welcome Weekend includes city and campus tours and a Shopping Shuttle.
Visit the New Students section of the ISSS site for specific dates and times. No registration is required for the International Student Orientation programs.
International Texas Residents
Recent changes to legislation and policy mean that some non-citizen students may now qualify for Texas residency. If you have applied for U.S. permanent resident status, hold a certain visa type other than F-1 student visa, or graduated from a Texas high school after attendance for three consecutive years, contact the UT residency office at 512-475-7408 or 475-7407 for further information on residency and the steps needed to verify residency status. Immunization Requirements
The university requires and recommends that incoming students submit proof of certain immunizations. Information about the requirements is available from University Health Services.
Course Schedules
Incoming undergraduate students should register for courses only after consulting with an academic advisor, preferably during orientation. However, you may want to review the information available about course schedules from the Registrar’s Office.
Transcript Evaluation for Transfer Students
Transcripts submitted by transfer applicants are evaluated for possible transfer credit only after an admission decision is made. The University of Texas at Austin accepts transfer credit only from U.S. institutions that are accredited by one of the six regional accrediting associations and from overseas institutions recognized and under the authority of the Ministry of Education in a specific country.
Credit is awarded on a course-by-course basis with such factors as type of institution, level of course, and grades earned representing critical factors in the process. Credit is not awarded for studies done in high school, regardless of the level of the individual courses studied. Please consult with the Graduate and International Admissions Center for questions regarding transfer credit for overseas study.
Once the Graduate and International Admissions Center has evaluated your transcripts for possible transfer credit, the advising office in your academic department will determine how any transfer credit awarded will apply to a specific degree program. Once transfer credit has been awarded it can be viewed through the Interactive Degree Audit system.
