Q: Where are you from?
A: I was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and moved to Austin, Texas, when I was eight. I graduated from William B. Travis High School in Austin. Go Rebels!
Q: What did you study in college?
A: I have a Bachelor of Arts in English and a master’s degree in secondary education from the University of Pennsylvania.
Q: What's your favorite place and thing to do in Austin?
A: I grew up in Austin so I've seen it grow from a small town to a small city. I love so many things about this city that it's difficult to list them all, but I'll try. The Austin Zoo is a great place to visit and support because all of their animals have been rescued. I grew up going to Stacy Park in South Austin, as well as the better-known Zilker Park. If you're here over the summer, you can't miss the opportunity to go to the Zilker Hillside Theater and catch the annual musical production.
Lastly, one of my favorite things about Austin is the food! There is a great Cuban restaurant named Habana, a "fast food" Japanese restaurant called Zen and a wonderful Spanish tapas bar called Malaga.
Q: Your favorite place on campus?
A: I love to visit the MLK statue as often as possible. The Littlefield Building is one of my favorites because it reminds me of some of the architecture I love from the East Coast. I also think that the Student Services Building, one of the campus' newest structures, is the place for a new student to go. It houses University Health Services, the Multicultural Information Center, the Office of the Dean of Students, Counseling and Mental Health and the all-important Student Financial Services.
Q: What group of students do you work with?
A: I have a unique responsibility in the Freshman Admissions Center. I work with alumni, students, parents and staff who want to volunteer their time to assist with recruitment efforts. Because we do not typically send admissions representatives out of state, though, I'm the contact person for East Coast students. In addition, I am the recruiter for New York City, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Connecticut.
Q: What do you like about admissions counseling?
A: I have worked in the field of admissions for eight years and I love interacting with prospective students and their families. Every family has a different story, a different background and different concerns. I look forward to serving as a resource for students as they make their college decisions, and I hope they will continue to see me as a resource once they have become UT Austin students.
Advice to Students
Seize all of the opportunities that present themselves. Find out what is available to you, do your research and jump in with both feet. After you arrive, you will be bombarded with e-mail from various university offices, departments and organizations, and the temptation to simply "delete" those e-mails, but resist that urge. There are so many resources available to you and so many exciting opportunities awaiting you at the university. Find out about them and have fun!
