Q: How long have you been working in Admissions?
A: During my junior year at UT, I volunteered for the Admissions Office through the SHARE (Students Helping the Admissions Recruitment Effort) program. I liked it so much that I decided to apply for a job as a SHARE Program Specialist during my senior year. Luckily, when I graduated there was an opening for an Admissions Counselor, so I applied. After five years as a counselor, I was promoted to Director of the Houston Admissions Center. Now I find myself back in Austin coordinating on campus recruitment events for the Office of Admissions.
Q: What's your favorite UT fact?
A: The first UT mascot was a dog named "Pig"! Can you imagine "Hook 'em, Hounds!" instead of "Hook 'em, Horns!"? Confused? Check out the story of our first mascot and other UT facts.
Q: Your favorite place on campus?
A: The south mall while standing in front of the tower, where you can look toward the south and see the Capitol and then turn north to see the Tower looming overhead (keeping its watch over you)! Another favorite is the recently renovated Turtle Pond, a medium-sized pond just north of the Tower which is home to tons of turtles! The baby turtles rest on the backs of the larger turtles while they rest on rocks that stick out of the water. Who knew that turtles liked to sunbathe?!
Q: Your favorite parts of Austin?
A: Too many to list! I absolutely love this town! Being the desert rat that I am, seeing green trees, rolling hills, and water was so shocking! I finally understand why the bluebonnet is the state flower! Springtime in Austin is amazing. There are spectacularly-colored wild flowers scattered all across the city and especially on the sides of our highways. If you're into the outdoors, there are a variety of hike and bike trails along with natural springs and creeks. If you like dogs, Austin is a very dog-friendly town, too. Several different cafes, pubs, and burgers joints allow pets to join their owners for dining out. There's even a few parks just for dogs (and their owners, too). I'm also a firm believer in the "Keep Austin Weird" mantra, which translates into supporting local businesses and restaurants. That's the fun part of living here: there's so much local flavor to take advantage of, you'll begin to scorn the chains!

Q: What do you enjoy about admissions counseling?
A: From the moment I volunteered for the SHARE program, I loved Admissions. I enjoyed working with prospective students, giving them the "real scoop" on life as a UT student. I felt like I was making a difference in people's lives, which happened to be one of my career goals. So you can imagine my excitement when an Admissions Counselor position opened around graduation time. I relish the opportunity to work closely with students, positively impacting their lives and feeling like I am really making a difference.
Advice to Students
1) Visit as many universities as you can because finding the right match for you is the most important part of the college selection process.
2) Try your hardest in absolutely everything! Knowing you have done your best is a good feeling!
3) And although it is easier said than done, don't PROCRASTINATE!
