Q: Where are you from?
A:
I was born in Austin, Texas. We moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee (known for the Manhattan Project) when I was still a baby and that’s where I grew up. My family moved to northwest Houston, Texas, when I was 13 years old. I attended and graduated from Cypress Creek High School.

Q: Where did you go to college and what did you study?
A:
I graduated from The University of Texas at Austin. As an undergraduate, I double majored in English and Spanish. I chose English because Mrs. Woolley, my English AP teacher, inspired in me a new passion for reading and writing. I chose Spanish because I had studied the language since the 7th grade and loved it!

While I was still working on my bachelor’s degree, I became interested in Women’s Studies, but UT didn’t have an undergraduate major in Women’s and Gender Studies. In 2006, when I decided to go back to school for my master’s degree, UT established Women’s and Gender Studies as an undergraduate major. I applied and was admitted to the Women’s and Gender Studies master’s degree program.

Q: What interests you about working in admissions?
A:
Over the years, I have worked with both high school and college students in various capacities and have found that it is one of the most rewarding types of work. Choosing a college and filling out the application was stressful for me, and I was filled with questions and uncertainty. I want to make that process easier for prospective students by answering their questions and letting them know just how awesome it is to be a Texas Longhorn.

Q: What is your favorite place on campus?
A:
I spent a good deal of my college nights in the Texas Union, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. The lounge on the 3rd floor is a great place for napping, and the various Student Events Center activities are a great way to unwind and have fun after a hard day of classes and studying.

Q: What is your favorite UT Austin fact?
A:
The albino squirrel DOES exist! (One of the most popular campus legends is that if you see one of the rare albino squirrels on campus on the day of a test, you are guaranteed to make an A. UT Austin students even formed the Albino Squirrel Preservation Society to “foster compassion and goodwill” toward the squirrels.)

Q: What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?
A:
I really love theatre, so one of my favorite things to do in Austin is see shows. There are many great, inexpensive or free shows to see right on the UT campus. The Center for African and African American Studies (CAAAS) has a Performing Blackness series that my friend and I often attend. I was even in one of the shows! Zachary Scott Theater Center puts on some phenomenal productions, as well as the Vortex Repertory Company on Manor Road. Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is also one of my favorite places to go with my friends. What could be better than dinner and a movie at the same time?

Advice

  • Enjoy learning. College isn’t just a place to learn historical facts or mathematical theories. It’s a place to learn about yourself and others. Relish the experience and remember to never stop growing.
  • Don’t be afraid to get out there and meet new people. It’s amazing how these people can and will shape your life.
