More Than a Number

Some people think you're just a number at UT Austin; that's not true. I really enjoy talking with my professors and advisors and getting to know them. In turn, they get to know me. In my experience, spending time in their offices helps me understand the coursework and subject matter better, and it also helps me establish a good relationship with them. I see many of my professors as great role models, and I feel comfortable enough with my advisors that I talk to them about academic things and my personal life. They listen, give great advice, and we have fun in the process.

Unexpected Opportunities

I got an unexpected call from my advisor asking me to meet him in his office the next day. I met with him and he told me about an opportunity to do a Maymester study abroad program in Sicily, Italy. I didn't have to think about it for long because I had always wanted to study abroad. So in May of 2005, I took an art history course through UT Austin while in Sicily. I had an incredible time, and it has been the best, unexpected thing that has happened to me so far at UT Austin.

Annabel's advice on…

Studying

Before a test, spend a week (or longer if necessary) studying, and read everything your professor has assigned. Choose a good spot, take a few coffee breaks and don't forget to get plenty of rest before the day of the test.

Getting around campus

It's impossible to park on campus without a permit. Take a Capitol Metro bus (they're free for students) or plan your day so you can drive to campus in the evening to study when parking isn't as bad.

Living on campus

Living on campus is great experience, and I still talk to a lot of people I met when I lived in Kinsolving Residence Hall, including my best friend. Take advantage of the perks of living in a residence hall: free movie rentals and workout facilities (in some residence halls).

More about Annabel

Work-Study

I received a work-study position in the Department of History which allows me to work on campus between classes, earn money and have fun at the same time.

Plans for the future

I plan to get a job with a large advertising agency in New York, Chicago or California. I'm expecting long hours but a lot of fun, too. I can't wait for the day when I get to see an ad that I worked on be shown on television.

Favorites

  • Class: A tie between American Studies with Janet M. Davis and Nonverbal Communication (CMS 334K) with Mark Knapp. Both professors are brilliant and full of energy and enthusiasm.
  • Book: Loving Pedro Infante by Denise Chavez
  • Movie: Zoolander
  • Thing about Austin: Its energy!
  • Experience at UT Austin: Meeting (and getting a hug from) movie director Robert Rodriguez after he attended an event I helped organize as part of the Mexican American Culture Committee.
  • Favorite study locations on campus: Flawn Academic Center (FAC): The lighting is perfect; it is never cold and the new furniture is comfortable.
  • Fill in the blank: I can’t ____ without _______.
Answer: I can’t spend a day without humor.
