FIGs Built-in Study Group

I participated in a FIG (First-Year Interest Group) during the fall semester of my freshman year. I made so many friends. The FIG was like a built-in study group in all of my classes. We all studied together and sat together in class. I definitely recommend doing that.

Rose Bowl Adventure

Participating in the Longhorn Band Silk Line has really been beneficial. I have made great friends that serve as a family for me. Being a part of a group gives you a “home away from home.”

My favorite experience of all was going to the Rose Bowl with the Longhorn Band. We marched in a five-mile-long parade, The Tournament of Roses, while it poured rain. We also marched in a parade at Universal Studios and Disneyland. After all of the fun leading up to the game, we then went to the actual game, which was AWESOME! There were hundreds of thousands of people there and we actually got to perform during halftime. When we won, I went crazy! We went back to the hotel and had a huge party again. And, I got to do it with two of my absolute best friends! That week will probably be the best week of my life.

My Biggest Challenge Is Now My Favorite Thing

The biggest challenge that I’ve overcome is now probably my favorite thing about college—living on my own. At first, living on my own seemed pretty intimidating, but now that I’ve gotten used to it, I absolutely love it!

Chelsey's advice on...

Making friends

Definitely get involved in an organization. Don’t try to be in all of them, but pick one or two. Also, go to campus events and social activities.

Recommended freshman event

I went to Gone to Texas and it was very informative and entertaining. I learned a lot about different organizations as well as academic programs. I would recommend going to this event. It is at the beginning of the semester and you can meet people and learn more about UT.

Living on campus and off

I live on campus. I think the advantage to living on campus is that you can focus on school because you’re at school all the time! There are tons of things to do on campus and I suggest that everyone goes through a dorm experience their freshman year. It’s a great experience and you get to meet a lot of neat, fun people.

Next fall, I plan to live in an apartment off campus. If you stay on campus all throughout college, you don’t allow yourself to have to opportunity of exploring the city of Austin. There is so much more to Austin than just UT. I think it is important for people to get to know the city they’re living in… especially such a great city like Austin!

Parking on campus

If you park illegally, you WILL get a ticket! So don’t!

Cheer for Charity

I am the founder of Cheer for Charity: a local exhibition featuring competitive and non-competitive cheerleading and dance teams. We collect the ticket fees and participation fees and donate all profits to United Way of Waco-McLennan County. My mom and I began the annual event in 2002 and have raised over $11,000 for United Way. I feel very blessed to be able to give back to my community while doing what I love to do best, cheerleading.

Changing majors

I started out as a Radio-Television-Film major. Before I even got to UT, I realized that standing behind a camera or microphone was not what I wanted to do. I’ve been told before that I am a “people person.” So, I decided to apply my people skills to real life and attempt to pursue a career in public relations. I am so excited about this career and feel like it is a great choice for me.

Favorites

  • Favorite Class: News Media Writing and Editing (J315) offered by the College of Communication.
  • Pastime / Recreational activity: Going to rock shows and hanging out downtown.
  • Thing about Austin: The diversity.
  • Fill in the blank: I can’t ______ without ____________.
I can’t live without my iBook (laptop).
