Why I came to UT Austin

The strength and notoriety of the McCombs School of Business was what initially attracted me to UT Austin. I have known for a long time that business was what I wanted to study in college. There wasn’t one single factor that caused me to choose UT, rather it was the gut feeling I had after visiting and the excitement I felt whenever I thought about coming here.

Meet and Greet

I have enjoyed meeting people the most. This campus is extremely diverse and has allowed me to encounter all kinds of interesting people. Yes, from a satellite view, UT seems like a huge school. However, by becoming involved in different organizations I feel as if I have shrunk the size of the university down. I run into people I know all the time – something I did not expect to experience attending such a large university.

Faculty and Staff Encounters

I have been blown away by the professors and staff who work in the business school. It is blatantly obvious that they love what they do. They dedicate so much of their time and energy to help ensure that you succeed. The professors and advisors I have had have been extremely helpful - whether it is in assisting me understand a topic from class or helping me to decide what career path to take. They are very willing to help you in any way you can.

I have also been very impressed with the amount of dedication shown by the professors and staff. For example, on my first day of accounting class my sophomore year, I walked into the class room and as my professor handed me the course syllabus he said, “Schwartz is it? Yes, Jeffrey Schwartz. How was your Winter Break?” The professor had memorized each student’s name before class had even started. I could not believe he had taken the time to do so. Now while I must admit that this is the exception, it is not uncommon for professors to e-mail you back and answer your questions at 10:30 at night so you can finish your assignment or to hold extra office hours to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to get the help they need.

Got some free time…
Another great part of UT is it is located in Austin. There is SO MUCH to do. There are all of the outdoor opportunities such as taking a kayak out on Town Lake, going to Barton Springs, running and biking trails, and on and on and on. Also, being in the Live Music Capital, there are always a variety of concerts to see. I realize that I am only going to be here for a limited amount of time, so I try to take advantage of every opportunity to have fun. I really enjoy living and studying in Austin.

Final Thoughts…

“I love attending UT and am extremely proud to call myself a Texas Longhorn.”
