The University of Texas at Austin

If you’d like to attend UT Austin but you’ve already started your studies at another college or university, you should apply as a transfer student. Even if you already have a degree from another college or university and you’d like to work on another or take additional undergraduate courses at UT Austin, you should apply for transfer admission.

International Transfer Applicants

International applicants should visit Be a Longhorn's International Undergraduate Transfers section for details about transfer admission for international students.

Transferable Coursework Requirement

To be eligible to apply for transfer admission, you must have graduated from high school or earned a GED and have completed or be currently enrolled in the remaining coursework to earn at least 30 semester hours of required transferable coursework. (International applicants must submit at least 30 semester hours of transferable credit before they will be considered for admission.)

Application review

If you’ve officially started your studies at another institution, the University of Texas at Austin won’t review your application for transfer admission until you meet the transferable coursework requirement.

Preference for applicants with 30 hours of coursework completed by the deadline

Transfer applicants may apply for admission while working to complete the last of their required 30 semester hours of transfer coursework. However, when admission decisions are made, preference may be given to applicants who have completed 30 hours by the deadline.

In cases where the applicant has not completed 30 hours by the deadline, all application items, including official transcripts of already completed coursework, must arrive in the Office of Admissions by the deadline. Such applicants must then submit official transcripts showing completed coursework for the current semester as soon as the semester is completed and no later than June 1 for summer/fall applicants and January 5 for spring applicants.

Transcript submission

As part of your complete application, you must submit transcripts showing all college/university coursework in which you've enrolled. Take some time to review the information about submitting transcripts for completed work and work you have in progress.

Required coursework in residence

Admitted students must complete at least 60 semester hours of required coursework for their undergraduate degree in residence at the University of Texas at Austin. As a result, students transferring with more than 60 hours of transferable coursework should carefully consider how transferring might impact the amount of coursework required to earn a degree.

Contact the Office of Admissions at 512-475-7387 for questions about coursework in residence.
