Transfer applicants and Automatic Admission
According to Texas law, applicants who met the qualifications for automatic freshman admission to a Texas university when graduating from high school may qualify for automatic transfer admission to a Texas college or university. To qualify for automatic admission, transfer applicants must:
- Start college at a Texas community/junior college after graduating from high school.
- Complete the core curriculum at a Texas public junior college or other Texas public or private lower-division institution of higher education.
- Earn a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5 on a four-point scale (or the equivalent).
- Apply for transfer admission to an academic year that is not more than four academic years following the year in which the student graduated from high school.
If you believe that you may qualify for automatic admission as a transfer student, you should:
- Indicate on your ApplyTexas application that you believe that you qualify for automatic transfer admission based on Texas law. (A group of questions about various issues appears near the end of the online application.)
- Submit a complete application for transfer admission by the application deadline.
- Submit an official high school transcript by the application deadline indicating that you met the qualifications for automatic freshman admission when you graduated from high school.
Transfer applicants who qualify for automatic admission to UT Austin are eligible for admission to majors in the School of Undergraduate Studies, the College of Liberal Arts or the College of Natural Sciences.
Automatic admission for transfer applicants is based on SB 175, which was passed by the 81st Texas Legislature. This admission option is available only for students who graduated from high school in 2008 and after.
