TEXAS SPIRIT AND ATHLETICS

Spirit and pride run deep at The University of Texas at Austin, and nowhere is this passion more evident than when participating in or watching Texas Longhorn athletic events.
Longhorns have a lot to be proud of. The university has a unique history of traditions and a legacy of athletic achievements matched my very few other universities.
- Texas has claimed 47 team national championships, including titles most recently in football (2005), women’s indoor track and field (2006), women’s outdoor track and field (2005), baseball (2005 and 2002) and men’s swimming and diving (2000, 2001 and 2002).
- During the 2007-2008 season, the Longhorns recorded seven top five, ten top 10 and 16 top 20 NCAA Championship finishes.
- For seven consecutive years, Texas has finished in the top 10 of the United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings—a competition to recognize the country’s best overall collegiate athletics programs. In 2007-2008, Texas finished fifth—the highest of any Big 12 Conference school.
- Texas has claimed 75 Big 12 Conference titles—more than any other school since the league began operating in 1996. In the 2007-2008 season, Texas claimed five Big 12 Conference titles (volleyball, men's swimming and diving, men's indoor track and field, men's basketball and men's tennis) and two Postseason Big 12 Championships (women's soccer and baseball).
- Twenty-two Longhorns will participate in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Current and former Texas athletes have won 88 Olympic medals, including 19 in Athens in 2004.
- Texas was named “America’s Best Sports College” in a Sports Illustrated ranking of 324 Division I athletic programs.
- Bevo the Texas Longhorn is one of the most popular (and heaviest) mascots in college athletics. The Hook ’em, Horns hand sign is recognized worldwide as the symbol of the Texas Longhorns.
